Chaos Erupts Between Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo Alvarez
Patrick Breen/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK

Looks like there is no mending the relationship between Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya after their explosive press conference on Wednesday. Golden Boy promoted Alvarez for 10 years, ending their relationship in 2020.

De La Hoya made it a point to let Alvarez know who helped shaped his career. “I would be remiss if I didn’t respond to the man I used to promote,” De La Hoya said, in part. “He seems to have trouble remembering who helped him become a true global star. To be clear, I have nothing but respect for Canelo Álvarez as a fighter. His record and abilities speak for themselves, but he has spent much of the last two months insulting me, rather than promoting this fight … The company you fought under for decades has always had one name, and it’s mine. So put some f***ing respect on it.”

Those comments set Canelo off and the two got up in each others face in a heated exchange where they would have to be separated.  Canelo responded to De La Hoya’s war of words. “This idiot, this [guy] here to my left, try not to forget that I was already ‘Canelo’ when I came to the United States and that he only profited from my name,” said Alvarez, whose first name is Saul but is now usually referred to as the mononym Canelo. “He never lost a single cent, but instead made money. Have you already paid Golovkin what you wanted to steal from him?”

Nevertheless there’s still a fight happening on Saturday. Undoubtedly Jaime Munguia is looking to upset Canelo and shock the boxing world. He’ll get his shot on Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena.
